Affordable Help Through Support Groups

Happy Minds Group is passionate about widening access to mental health support, which is why we are proud to offer a growing range of Support groups at our Didsbury Centre.

Support groups can be an affordable and effective alternative to individual therapy. Support groups provide a supportive environment where participants can explore shared experiences, build insight, and feel less alone - often at a lower cost than one-to-one counselling.

The therapy and support groups at our Didsbury Centre are led by therapists and counsellors and run on a weekly or fortnightly basis, depending on the focus of the group.

Because groups require a minimum number of participants to run safely and effectively, sessions are offered on a monthly basis.

Group Fees

  • Groups start from £25 per session

Support groups can be a powerful way to access professional support while benefiting from shared understanding and connection making it both cost-effective and emotionally enriching.

What kind of Support Group is right for me?

Choosing the right type of support group is an important step in finding help that feels safe, effective, and suited to where you are right now. Group-based therapy can be a powerful way to explore personal challenges, build connection, and experience meaningful change, but not all groups work in the same way.

Below, we explain the difference between group therapy and support groups to help you decide which option may be right for you.

What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a confidential therapeutic space where you meet regularly with others who are navigating similar emotional or psychological challenges. Together, group members explore their experiences and learn about themselves through shared reflection and interaction.

A trained and experienced therapist facilitates the group, helping to:

  • Hold the emotional space safely

  • Support healthy group dynamics

  • Encourage insight, reflection, and personal growth

Group therapy sessions are typically unstructured, with less emphasis on tools or techniques and more focus on what emerges naturally within the group. The process itself - relationships, emotions, and interactions -becomes the therapeutic work.

Benefits of Group Therapy

  • A consistent group allows trust and depth to develop over time

  • Members gain insight through shared experiences and feedback

  • Many people find group therapy deeply meaningful and transformative

Because safety and cohesion are essential, group therapy groups remain stable. New members are only introduced when the therapist and the group feel that the person will be supportive and therapeutically appropriate for the existing dynamic.

Is Group Therapy right for me?

Group therapy can be challenging at times. It requires commitment, openness, and a willingness to stay with the process even when emotions feel uncomfortable. For many people, this is exactly what makes it so powerful. For others, it may feel too intense or not the right fit at this stage.

How is a Support Group different?

If you’re looking for a gentler, more structured group experience, a support group may be a better option.

These support groups bring people together to:

  • Share experiences

  • Connect with others

  • Offer and receive mutual support

A therapist facilitates the group by holding the emotional space, managing group dynamics, and offering guidance, tools, psychoeducation, and therapeutic insights alongside the shared experiences of group members.

These groups are typically structured around a specific theme, such as stress, anxiety, relationships, or wellbeing. While personal growth still occurs through group interaction, the atmosphere is often more relaxed and supportive.

Key features of Support Groups

  • More structure and guidance from the therapist

  • A clearer focus on tools, education, and shared learning

  • Greater flexibility, allowing new members to join more easily

Which group is best for me?

Both group therapy and support groups can lead to real, lasting change. The right choice depends on:

  • Your current emotional needs

  • How much structure or depth you’re looking for

  • Whether you prefer a steady, closed group or a more flexible format

There’s no “right” or “wrong” option, only what feels right for you at this moment.
