Do I need psychotherapy, counselling or coaching?

For clients, the main difference often comes down to how deep you want to go in your personal growth, how much distress you’re experiencing, and how complex your challenges feel. Psychotherapists are trained to work with personality patterns at a deeper level, which allows them to support more profound or focused transformation, helping to create lasting change. They can offer both psychotherapy and counselling, depending on what feels right for you. Counsellors, meanwhile, usually focus on helping you manage specific issues or life situations but don’t tend to work directly with personality structure or provide psychotherapy.

Counselling is really about helping you navigate what’s going on right now — giving you space to feel heard, understood, and to find your own way forward.

Psychotherapy takes things a bit deeper. It’s about exploring the experiences and emotions that sit underneath your thoughts and behaviours. If you’re dealing with deeper issues or something that feels persistent — like anxiety, low mood, or unresolved trauma — psychotherapy offers a safe space to understand what’s driving those feelings and work towards real, lasting change.

Coaching works well when you’re feeling okay but want a bit of extra support to move forward or create meaningful change. It’s great for building motivation, clarity, and direction. Even during tough times, if your focus is on personal growth or achieving specific goals, coaching can be the right fit. It can also be short-term — sometimes just one focused session, like for performance or mental preparation in sports, can be surprisingly powerful.

Coaching and psychotherapy both help you feel stronger, more confident, and more resilient — they just get there in different ways.

Psychotherapy looks a little deeper, exploring the past and the emotional patterns that can keep you feeling stuck. It’s about understanding yourself on a deeper level and finding healing that lasts.

Coaching is more about the here-and-now — building momentum, setting goals, and taking practical steps toward the life you want.

There’s often some natural overlap between the two, which is why coaching at Didsbury Therapy Centre is only offered by qualified psychotherapists and counsellors. You’ll always be working with someone who understands both the emotional depth and the practical drive that real change needs.
